Games are not the opposite of seriousness

There is a reflex that treats “it’s just a game” as a dismissal. The Eshkere framing runs the other way: once your foundation is secure, choosing your games — and playing them wholeheartedly — is the serious work of a life.

Watch anyone who is genuinely good at something optional. A speedrunner, a violinist, an amateur historian of one small town. The optionality is precisely what makes the dedication luminous. Nobody made them do it.

The reason to put health first is not to shrink the space of play. It is to make wholehearted play possible at all. A player who is exhausted, isolated or unwell isn’t freed from their games — they’re just condemned to play them badly.
